Understanding ABG Results: An Easy Guide to Interpreting Arterial Blood Gases

ABG value Interpretation
pH A normal pH range is 7.35-7.45. A pH below 7.35 is considered acidotic, while a pH above 7.45 is alkalotic.
PaO2 A normal PaO2 range is 80-100 mmHg. A PaO2 below 60 mmHg may indicate hypoxemia, while a PaO2 above 100 mmHg may indicate hyperoxia.
PaCO2 A normal PaCO2 range is 35-45 mmHg. A PaCO2 below 35 mmHg may indicate hyperventilation, while a PaCO2 above 45 mmHg may indicate hypoventilation.
HCO3 A normal HCO3 range is 22-26 mEq/L. An HCO3 below 22 mEq/L may indicate metabolic acidosis, while an HCO3 above 26 mEq/L may indicate metabolic alkalosis.
Oxygen saturation (SaO2) A normal SaO2 range is 95-100%. An SaO2 below 90% may indicate hypoxemia.
