When preparing for the NCLEX, you don’t need to memorize every niche oncology value, but you absolutely must master the four core cancer biomarkers: CA-125 (ovarian), CEA (colorectal), PSA (prostate), and AFP (liver/testicular). The most high-yield rule to remember for test day is that tumor markers are used to monitor treatment efficacy and screen for disease recurrence, NOT to definitively diagnose cancer, which always requires a tissue biopsy. Because benign conditions like smoking, pregnancy, or local inflammation can also cause these levels to spike, the nurse’s role focuses on evaluating long-term trends and preparing clients for further diagnostic imaging rather than assuming a definitive malignancy based on a single blood test.
